The genus lipaugus refers to the gray color of this bird and derives from the Greek term lipauges which means dark. The epithet weberi was dedicated to Walter H. Weber for his great contribution to the Antioquia Ornithological Society (SAO) and for promoting the study and conservation of birds in Colombia. The name refers to its most contrasting morphological characteristic and the name in Spanish (Arrierito Antioqueño) refers to the department of Antioquia, the only region in Colombia where this bird has been found.

It has a black and straight bill. The male is bright green on top, as well as on his throat and chest. The belly, flanks and sides of their rump exhibit underground bars before and their thighs are white.

This species lives only in the central Andes in Colombia, between 1800 and 3100m. It is located in the Cordillera Central in the volcanic massif Ruiz-Tolima in the departments of Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima.

The masked trogon is a species of bird in the family Trogonidae and the order Trogoniformes, a family of large, large- headed, long-tailed, tubular- shaped birds of tropical and subtropical regions. Colorful and sluggish.
