The long-tailed sylph feeds on nectar (as of many other hummingbirds), insects, and, at times, small spiders. Flowers with higher sugar content are often preferred. They can be seen at hummingbird feeders, as well. A long-tailed sylph can lick nectar up to 13 times per second!
It is found in the undergrowth of humid forest, especially near the edges.

It typically sits exposed in fences or on shrubs or small trees, migrants almost anywhere, even in the treetops of the jungle and during migration gather in flocks of hundreds or thousands to spend the night. They fly into the air or go down to the ground after insects or congregate in fruit trees.
This species is native to the foothills and this fruiteater is usually found in the understory of dense, wet, mossy forests.
It is measures around 11.5 centimeters, it has dark brown iris, grey legs and blackish bill with the base of the lower mandible gray blue. The male of the nominal breed presents yellow from the forehead to the middle part of the crown, has the sides of the head, the back of the crown, nape and upper parts of lustrous black color and the top surface of its tail is dark blue. Its lower parts are bright yellow and the lower surface of its dark grey tail with the inner margin of the two or three pairs of external rectrices of white color.
