Mountain flycatcher, found in all three Colombian mountain ranges where it can be rare to locally common. His name Myiarchus means ruler of the flies, derived from the Greek roots myia = fly and arkhós = ruler. The epithet cephalotes refers to his head, from the Greek kephalé = head and otés = related to.

In the Colombian circuit of bird-watchers –those men and women who are passionate about birdwatching– recognize that John Edward Myers (Minnesota, 1975) is a visionary who managed to put Colombia on the map of world Birding tourism, and a kind of “conscience national” that made us realize the enormous wealth that the country has in terms of birds.

This large dark bird builds its nest in conspicuous colonies-one can spot the chosen trees full of long, narrow sack nests from far away, as well as hear the loud, resonant kuk call from the vocal oropendolas. This oropendola can be identified by its mostly black body followed by a bright yellow tail, with a chestnut-colored head, pale blue eyes, and long ivory bill that starts high up on the forehead
