The rufous-throated tanager is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae and the order Passeriformes, it is measures around 13 centimeters.

Distinctive small tanager with mostly black head, orange throat, and bold black spotting on underparts. Upperparts are dark with a scaled look.

A foothill species, occurring from around 600–1,500 m on the west slope of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador.

Couples or small groups forage with flocks of mixed species, in the middle and high levels of forest and edge, visit the fruit feeders.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and heavily degraded former forest.
