The Great Sapphirewing is a species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family.

This a pretty big hummingbird. It has straight and thick bill. Its nuances range from bright blue green, shiny and greenish black. It is found in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It is natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.
Is located between 2600 and 3600 meters, usually above 3000 meters.
It has a long tail measuring approximately 69 mm, which is deeply forked, its external tail feathers have a greenish black. The female is above a bright green color; her forehead is dark gray. It has blue wing covers as in the male, but the primaries with much less blue. The lower parts have rufous cinnamon nuances.
The Great Sapphirewings primarily feed on nectar taken from a variety of brightly colored, scented small flowers of trees, herbs, shrubs and epiphytes.
It is usually solitary and territorial but often joins mixed flocks of tanagers, honeycreeper and warbler.
